2012 - Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The expressive Mercedes C-Class Coupé sees Mercedes-Benz, now in its 125th year of corporate history, entering a new market segment and for the first time offering a compact, classic coupé. This youthful, sporty two-door car was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

The new model deploys the progressive technology featured on the soon to be launched new generation of the C-Class to deliver an impressive coupé format that combines pure fun at the wheel with exemplary efficiency. In terms of attitude, this debuting model is tailored to a customer group aged 35 to 45 for whom professional success, love of life and a strong sense of responsibility are all important.

"By extending the C-Class portfolio, we are consciously targeting new customers," says Dr Joachim Schmidt, Head of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"The new model is youthful, stylish and dynamic. What we are offering is an exceptionally sporty way to enter the world of the Mercedes-Benz coupé."

The design: dynamic with classic coupé proportions

From the side, the new coupé beguiles the onlooker with its compact proportions, low silhouette (41 mm flatter than the saloon) with powerful shoulders and a narrow C-pillar in a classic three-box design. Typical coupé features include the short front overhang, long bonnet, steeply raked windscreen and long, stretched out roof. The cabin extends far beyond the rear axle over the rear window in its flat position to a sportily short tail end.

While the wedge-shaped, sloping beltline demonstrates affinity with the C-Class, its strong upsweep into the C-pillar is an entirely distinctive element. The final part of the beltline trim moves sharply upwards to meet the roofline trim. This upsweep not only adds a sporty flourish to the way the side windows look; the shaping at the bottom of the C-pillar also enhances the powerful shoulders.

Front and rear: truly a coupé, truly C-Class

At the front, the new coupé shares the same styling as the latest C-Class and yet still has its own twist. The front view is dominated by the prominent radiator grille surround including the bumper. The centre air intake opens upwards, forming a visual base unit for the radiator grille which has the double-louvre style typical of a coupé. Two chrome louvres extend left and right either side of the central star, tapering off at the outer edges and creating a sporty, arrow-shaped horizontal sweep which gives the front end a pronounced V-shape.

This continues into the side sections which extend from beneath the headlamps and blend into the feature lines along the vehicle flanks, thereby linking the front end with the sides. The side air intakes in the bumper featuring integrated, horizontal daytime running lamps are positioned low down, giving the coupé a road-hugging appearance. The shape of the clear-lens headlamps creates a dynamic impression, and acts together with the bonnet, radiator grille and bumper trim to reinforce the pronounced front section.

From the rear, the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé looks sportily short. Because the roof flows beyond the rear axle with the steeply raked rear window and fluid C-pillars, the appearance of length is reduced. A wide chamfer at the top of the boot lid, which is based on the side panel, highlights the rear's compactness. Positioning the tail lights as far apart as possible emphasises width. The particular impression of depth is achieved by a centrally located LED indicator, which appears to float in front of the red upper and lower light bands with their more deeply set LEDs. Continuous, horizontal light-catching contours in the bumper further accentuate the broad, deep-set effect. The AMG rear skirt between the exhaust system's tailpipe trim makes the rear end look lighter and gives the vehicle a distinctively sporty and dynamic quality.

In the UK the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé will feature the AMG Sports Package as standard which further enhances the look of the car with AMG bodystyling and 18" AMG alloys.

The interior: highest quality with exclusive colour accents

The dashboard instrument panel features a strong, sporty and high-quality design. Three tube rings with a galvanised finish demonstrate the car's sporty credentials to the driver. As standard, the coupé comes with the new generation of three-spoke steering wheel with its chromed central spoke that first appeared on the new CLS. The touch surfaces of the controls are finely detailed and galvanised. The stepped top of the instrument cluster also accommodates the central display and continues onto the front passenger side as a discreet light-catching contour. The central, trapezoidal air vents and the round vents on the outside are highlighted in detail by galvanised trim. The control panel of the new-generation communication and information unit has silver-coloured keys. The combination of matt keys, high-gloss areas and a new thumbwheel design underlines the high perceived value of the interior.

A large section of trim is a high-quality part of the dashboard instrument panel. This extends from the centre air vents across the front passenger side to the outer air vent, emphasising the interior's generous proportions.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé is a fully fledged four-seater featuring four sporty, comfortable integral seats. If desired, the backrests in the rear can be folded down to make the boot larger.

2013 - Skoda Citigo

Škoda is continuing its product offensive by introducing its seventh model line. With the Škoda Citigo, at 3.56m long, the Mladá Boleslav automaker is entering the A00 segment. The Škoda Citigo will debut on the domestic Czech market by the end of 2011. Other European countries will follow at the beginning of summer 2012. The Škoda Citigo offers maximum utilisation of space and seats for four passengers. The Škoda Citigo will be launched as a three-door, with a five-door version to come in 2012.

"The Škoda Citigo is one of the pillars of our growth strategy. It paves the way for our brand to enter a very promising segment," said Škoda Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland "The new product fully meets the corporate philosophy of the Škoda Brand expressed through the "Simply Clever" slogan. Despite its small size, it offers ample interior space, but is surprisingly agile, and attractive in terms of trims and technologies used. Although the Škoda Citigo is a small car, it is a typical Škoda—and as such fits perfectly with our plans."The designers managed to give the car a distinct look that declares at first glance: this is the new Škoda. The finned grille set in a chrome-plated frame and precisely shaped headlamps give the car the typical Škoda look. The designers have done a fantastic job on the rest of the car's body. With a length of 3.56 metres, width of 1.65 metres and height of 1.48 metres, the Škoda Citigo is one of the smallest vehicles in its segment. The volume of the luggage compartment is 251 litres. It can be extended to 951 litres by folding down the rear seats.

The key target groups are young drivers, young families looking to get themselves a second or even third car, and also "best agers." They are customers who are rather cost-sensitive and have a rational approach to cars on the one hand but high demands for quality, practicality, design and safety on the other. Škoda did not have much to offer such groups of customers in the small car segment. Prof. Vahland: "We can see that the demand for small cars with low fuel consumption, at a favourable price and with reasonable operating costs is growing. Škoda's new small vehicle is a reaction to this trend. We are entering new ground and the Škoda Citigo will attract a lot of customers mainly in our European markets. "The Škoda Citigo places great emphasis on safety. For the first time in a Škoda vehicle, the designers have used a Head-Thorax side airbag to protect the heads of both the driver and the front seat passenger and together with other elements it forms an exemplary safety packet in its class. In addition, active safety is significantly enhanced by the new "City Safe Drive" brake assistant. The system is automatically activated at speeds below 30 km/h and a laser sensor identifies a danger of collision. Along with the Volkswagen up!, the Škoda Citigo is currently the only car in the small vehicle segment to offer the emergency braking functionality.

Two new, three-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engines will be available after the Škoda Citigo's launch: both have a volume of 1.0 litre and their power outputs are 44 kW/60 HP and 55 kW/75 HP. In the economical Green Tec version average consumption is 4.2l/100km and 4.3l/100km respectively. Emissions are 97g and 99g CO2/km respectively. Fuel consumption and emissions are 4.5l/100km and 105g CO2 per km for the 44kW engine. The engine with a power output of 55kW consumes 4.7l/100km and emits 108g of CO2 per km.

2012 - Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

AMG is presenting a new dream-car: the 2012MY Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. This super sports car thrills with a perfect combination of open-top driving pleasure, outstanding driving dynamics and sophisticated lightweight construction. The 2012 SLS AMG Roadster will make its U.S. debut in Fall 2011.

The technological highlights of the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster include an aluminum spaceframe body, an AMG 6.3-liter V8 front-mid engine with dry sump lubrication developing a peak output of 563 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque, a seven-speed dual clutch transaxle transmission and a sports suspension with aluminum double wishbones - all of which will raise the pulse of sports car enthusiasts while providing outstanding driving dynamics and driving pleasure.

The compact fabric soft top of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster opens and closes in just eleven seconds, and can be operated on the move at speeds up to 31 mph (50 km/h). The new Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension with electronically controlled damping is available as an attractive optional extra. It enables the damping characteristics to be modified at the touch of a button. Using the AMG DRIVE UNIT, the driver of the SLS AMG Roadster is therefore able to choose his own suspension setup. Three modes are available: "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus".

"AMG Performance Media" is a unique new feature: this innovative, motorsport-inspired multimedia system offers an unrivalled combination of numerous telemetric displays such as lateral and linear acceleration, various engine data and lap times on a racetrack.

Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "The SLS Roadster is a super sports car, cruiser and highly desirable dream-car all in one. In its distinctive way, it continues the succession of iconic and exciting sports cars from Mercedes-Benz."

Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH: "Systematic lightweight construction, outstanding performance and a breathtaking design combined with sensuous open-air driving pleasure - the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster perfectly embodies the AMG philosophy of German engineering and craftsmanship. The gullwing model has already thrilled sports car fans all over the world, and now the convertible version is bound to cause a sensation."

Pure roadster design with perfect proportions

The new Roadster adds a second exciting dream-car to the SLS AMG family. Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz, Gorden Wagener: "As in the gullwing model, the pure, athletic design immediately catches the eye. Whether with the roof open or closed, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is an impressive visual delight!" The perfect proportions are particularly memorable: a long hood, the greenhouse positioned well to the rear and a short rear end. Plus the automatically extending rear wing, long wheelbase, wide track and short overhangs - in short, the convertible SLS AMG exudes effortless performance and an authentic charisma. The pronounced shoulder sections are reminiscent of tensed muscles, and suggest sheer power in combination with the large wheels - 265/35 ZR 19 (front) and 295/30 ZR 20 (rear). The attractive AMG Sepang brown metallic paint finish and weight-optimized forged wheels in a 10-spoke design, painted in matte black with a high-sheen rim flange, are available as new optional extras.

Features reminiscent of the 300 SL Roadster, the classic dream-car from the 1950s, include not only the wide radiator grille with its large Mercedes star and the wing-shaped cross-fin, but also the fins on the hood and on the vehicle sides. Like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster, the 300 SL Roadster appeared slightly later than the original gullwing 300 SL, but unlike the SL's both AMG dream cars are available at the same time.

Interior atmosphere like an aircraft cockpit

The interior continues the breathtaking design idiom of the exterior, and awakens associations with an aircraft cockpit: prominent features include the dashboard in the shape of a wing and the air vents with adjustable, cruciform nozzles reminiscent of jet engines. The extended center console of matte, solid metal and the new E-SELECT lever in the shape of an aircraft's thrust control are also design features adopted from the world of aviation. Another discreet, fine detail is the embossed AMG emblem on the leather-lined selector lever.

The AMG DRIVE UNIT - which like numerous other interior features is available in genuine carbon-fiber - is the central control unit in the center console: it allows the driver to choose a personal vehicle setup, including adjustment of the optional Adaptive AMG Sport Suspension. The AMG Performance steering wheel with its high-grade premium leather lining and flattened bottom rim section provides perfect vehicle control. The shift paddles and lower steering wheel bezel are made of solid metal.

2012 - Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

The successful Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is now more attractive than ever: the modified design of the top-of-the-range C-Class model is complemented by numerous enhancements to its technology which deliver even more driving enjoyment while reducing fuel consumption significantly. The introduction of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission with the "Controlled Efficiency" mode as standard along with a new power steering pump helps to reduce the combined NEDC fuel consumption by about ten percent to 12.0 l/100 km (Estate: 12.3 l/100 km). The output of the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is unchanged at 336 kW (457 hp) and can be increased to a maximum of 358 kW (487 hp) with the optional AMG Performance package. Agility, grip and ride comfort have been enhanced as a result of numerous measures to optimise the AMG sports suspension. New assistance systems and a new generation of telematics with internet access increase both safety and comfort.

The latest generation of the C63 AMG is now more dynamic and athletic than ever. Thanks to its new radiator grille with a large Mercedes star and a wing-type transverse louvre, as well as a new AMG front apron with a lower cross member painted in high-gloss black, special AMG daytime running lights and side air outlets, the front section recalls the look of the SL63 AMG high-performance roadster. The new bonnet with its modified powerdomes is now made of aluminium. New clear-lens headlamps emphasise the car's distinctive, self-confident presence, especially when the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS) is also specified. The wide front wings with the "6.3 AMG" legend and the new 5 twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels which are painted in titanium grey and have a high-sheen finish dominate the side view. Good contact with the road is provided by the wide 235/40 R 18 and 255/35 R 18 tyres at front and rear respectively.

The rear view of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG also evokes the SL63 AMG: the new AMG rear apron has a distinctive, black diffuser insert with three pronounced diffuser fins. The two chromed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system are as pleasing to the ear as they are to the eye.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission from the SL63 AMG

Under the skin, too, the top C-Class model boasts a wealth of new technology including the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission - another advanced feature adopted from the SL63 AMG. Rather than using a torque converter, this innovative transmission has a wet start-off clutch which allows it to deliver a much more efficient, agile and direct response. Fuel consumption and emissions have been reduced significantly thanks to the "Controlled Efficiency" mode and a new power steering pump: at 12.0 litres per 100 km (Estate: 12.3 l/100 km) the combined NEDC fuel consumption of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG is 1.4 litres (Estate: 1.3 litres) lower than that of the predecessor model; this represents a reduction in fuel consumption of some ten percent. The CO2 emissions figure is now 280 (Estate: 288) grams per kilometre. Both power variants have identical fuel consumption and emission figures.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission impresses with its exceptional flexibility: with four driving modes as well as double-declutching and RACE START functions it is as compatible with a relaxed, fuel-saving driving style as it is with high-speed laps on a closed racing circuit and extremely dynamic overtaking manoeuvres. The Controlled Efficiency "C" mode is programmed to provide early, comfortable upshifts while maintaining the lowest possible engine speed to help the driver keep fuel consumption down. The "S", "S+" and "M" modes deliver increased agility through fast, responsive gear changes and higher revs. Gear changes in the "S+" and "M" modes take just 100 milliseconds.

The naturally aspirated eight-cylinder engine with its large displacement of 6208 cc develops 336 kW (457 hp) at 6800 rpm and attains a peak torque of 600 newton metres at 5000 rpm. A look at the performance figures confirms that the new C63 AMG retains its predecessor's position as the top performing model in its segment: acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes just 4.5 seconds (Estate: 4.6 s) while the top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

2012 - BMW M5 - Luxury Design Car

A change in leadership is nigh in the exclusive segment that brings together ultra-dynamic business saloons with track-oriented drive and chassis technology. The new BMW M5 is poised to build on the tradition of its predecessors and once again redefine the performance experience available in a four-door car. Displaying the conceptual harmony, state-of-the-art technology and astonishingly dynamic handling for which BMW M cars have become renowned, the fifth-generation BMW M5 stirs the passion of keen drivers for top performance and blends it, in inimitable style, with the universal qualities of a top-class premium saloon. The most powerful engine ever fitted in a series-produced model from BMW M GmbH, the innovative Active M Differential - which optimises power transfer to the rear wheels - and model-specific chassis technology developed on the back of extensive racing expertise all secure the BMW M5 a dominant position in the high-performance saloon market.

The new BMW M5 is a high-performance sports car whose exceptional dynamic potential is geared squarely to the demands of track use yet which also sets a new benchmark in everyday driving with its supreme touring comfort and innovative equipment features. It also sets the pace in its class in terms of efficiency. The car's history of success in a segment founded more than 25 years ago by the original BMW M5 is set to continue in thrillingly contemporary style.

Under the bonnet of the new BMW M5 lies a newly developed, high-revving V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo (consisting of Twin Scroll Twin Turbo technology, a cross-bank exhaust manifold, High Precision Injection petrol direct injection and VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control), maximum output of 412 kW/560 hp at 6,000 - 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. The instantaneous power delivery and sustained thrust familiar from M cars are the key to acceleration of 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds (0 - 200 km/h/124 mph: 13.0 seconds). Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle stands at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres / 28.5 mpg imp (CO2 emissions: 232 g/km). While output has increased by around 10 per cent and maximum torque is up by more than 30 per cent, the new BMW M5 burns over 30 per cent less fuel than its predecessor.

Body design: hallmark M design elements make a genuine contribution to meeting technical requirements.

The design of the body faithfully showcases the standout characteristics of the new BMW M5. The dynamic proportions and stylishly authoritative appearance of the BMW 5-Series Saloon has been further enhanced by the addition of M-specific design features. The carefully selected modifications are geared precisely to meeting the technical demands of the car, making them a central element of the high-performance Saloon's overall concept. The car's extraordinary potential is highlighted subtly and with impressive authenticity by the distinctive design elements on its front, sides and rear end.

The design of the front apron clearly embodies the supreme power of the new V8 engine. The contour lines of the bonnet converge in a V to the brand's hallmark double-kidney grille. The wide-spread arrangement of the customary M black slats - like the three air intakes in the lower section of the front apron - emphasise the cooling air requirement of the engine behind the grille. The arrangement of the air intakes over various levels creates an impressive depth which underlines the dynamic, forward-thrusting appearance of the Saloon.

Dynamically formed intakes ensure precise airflow and optimum cooling.

The functional significance of the forward-projecting central aperture is emphasised by the width of the car, which spreads out towards the road surface, and the protruding form of the contour lines. The two side air intakes, meanwhile, have a dynamically curving form. Positioned far to the outer edges of the car, they emphasise its wide track and fill the spaces in the front apron the BMW 5-Series Saloon normally reserved for foglamps. At the lower edge of the front end, air-channelling flaps developed on the race track ensure optimised aerodynamics.

The standard-fitted bi-xenon headlights of the new BMW M5 generate daytime running light with visually unique LED light rings. The indicator lights positioned on the car's outer edges each consist of 10 LED units. LED accent lights cut across the top of the customary BMW twin round headlights to perfect the intent look - both during the day and in night-time driving - characteristic of BMW models.

Prominently flared wheel arches, three-dimensional gills, eye-catching side skirts.

The long wheelbase, set-back passenger compartment and High-gloss Black side window borders clearly accentuate the stretched silhouette of the new BMW M5. Muscular flared wheel arches spotlight the wide track, which helps gives the car its unshakable roadholding and impressive lateral acceleration. Wheels sitting flush with the bodywork and lowered suspension - a gift from the specially tuned chassis - enhance the car's sporting presence when viewed from the side. The model-specific 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design also assist in this regard. The lightweight construction of the optional 20-inch forged rims is highlighted by their five slim double spokes. This design clears a line of sight to the high-performance brakes with six-piston fixed callipers, hinting at the precision with which the driver can adjust the car's handling.

Elsewhere, the front side sections carry a fresh take on the hallmark M gills. The three-dimensional shaping, a wide chrome frame and the free-floating look of the indicator bar, which bears the M logo, give the intakes an extremely deep-set look. The mirror casings are painted in body colour, the mirror base and lower edge in High-gloss Black.

The side skirts of the new BMW M5 also have a design very much of their own. A particularly powerful bulge at the back end of the skirts and a crease rising slightly to the tail divert the eye to the rear wheel arches - and therefore to the driven axle of the high-performance model.

2011 Opel RAK e Concept - remote car

Energy costs, efficiency and lightweight design are in the spotlight at the 64th Frankfurt International Motor Show. Opel is staking a strong claim for the center of attention with an all-new battery-powered electric vehicle. The Opel RAK e Concept opens a new chapter in electric mobility and extends Opel's pioneering role in alternative propulsion systems. The radical RAK e is defined by minimal energy costs, 100 kilometers for one euro, one third of the weight of a modern small car, and a maximum speed of 120 km/h.

"We want to develop electric vehicles that everyone can afford. The range-extending concept of the Ampera demonstrates our leadership in electrification of the automobile, the Opel RAK e experimental vehicle aims to deliver pricing that even younger customers can afford. The RAK e has cool looks and production-potential. In future, efficiency will be measured in euros, not liters per 100 km; today we are pleased to present our "1 euro car", said Karl-Friedrich Stracke, Opel CEO, at the world premiere in Frankfurt.

The lightweight concept of the Opel RAK e is based on a steel space-frame structure beneath a skin of conventional synthetic material. This allows a high level of safety as well as affordable pricing. Opel deliberately avoids the use of expensive composite materials in its lightweight-design philosophy, in order to make electric mobility affordable for as many people as possible.

The name "RAK e" recalls the pioneering spirit inspired by Fritz von Opel and his revolutionary rocket-powered car in the last century. In 1928 RAK 2 catapulted the grandson of company-founder Adam Opel to a top speed of 228 km/h. The "e" not only stands for electric, but also takes up again the idea of ground-breaking experimental vehicles.

"The RAK e is inspired by our wealth of experience in the area of electro-mobility, above all by the Ampera"; explains Mark Adams, Vice President Design. "This progressive concept is creating a new class of electric vehicle; this is what future mobility with 'my first e-Opel' could look like. We are eager to see the reaction of visitors to the show."

Design: Connecting Fun and Functionality

The potential of the spectacular experimental vehicle is reflected in the innovative design. The bodywork is made of fully recyclable synthetic material; the tandem two-seat passenger compartment is reminiscent of glider. Thanks to the large cockpit canopy, the driver and passenger enjoy a feeling of spaciousness and all-around visibility. The front seat, steering column and armrests automatically tip forward to enable easy-entry; remote control via smart phone enhances the optical effect of this action. The pedals and the steering wheel adjust to the size of the driver.

The sporty character of the two-seater is underlined by visible chassis components, such as the wheel-integrated front disk brakes and the motorbike-derived rear swing-arm. The rear wheels enhance agility with a tread width of only 600 mm.

"1-Euro Car": Electric Propulsion with Minimal Running Costs

The development objectives - dynamic performance, low mass and optimum efficiency coupled with maximum simplicity - are reflected in the appearance. Young, environmentally conscious, or technology-fans, the Opel RAK e appeals to a variety of customers for whom the cool looks of an electric vehicle are as important as its energy consumption.

Around three meters long and 119 cm high, the aerodynamic Opel RAK e offers zero-emission driving at minimal running costs. After charging the battery for three hours at a cost of about one euro, the experimental vehicle has a range of up to 100 km. This results from the combination of low weight, minimal frontal area, low rolling resistance, and highly efficient electric propulsion.

Energy consumption per person is ten times lower than that of an economical small car. The cockpit features displays showing battery state-of-charge or the nearest charging station, infotainment equipment, and heating and cooling.

Early Start: Electric Driving Aged 16

A wide range of options in a variety of colors, materials and shapes would enable a customer to personalize the Opel RAK e to his or her own tastes. Eye-catching paint, contrasting starkly with the roof, and futuristic LED lights, are aimed squarely at young buyers, "a customer-group for whom we have more new ideas than ever before", says Mark Adams. Subject to local laws, even 16-year-olds could begin their driving careers in the Opel RAK e, by limiting the top speed to 45 km/h.

Weighing only 380 kg the Opel RAK e is only one third of the weight of a modern small car. The turning circle of just 5.5 m makes the experimental vehicle ideal for inner-city mobility. The projected top speed of 120 km/h and zero to 100 km/h acceleration in less than 13 seconds demonstrate that Opel's philosophy for urban mobility includes motorway-capability. It takes very little energy for Opel RAK e to deliver such performance - peak power output is 36.5 kW/49 hp; 10.5 kW/14 hp is continuously available. The useable battery capacity of 5 kWh enables a range of 100 km, which corresponds to fuel consumption of just 0.6 liters of gasoline. Over an annual 10,000 km the Opel RAK e's energy consumption would therefore be a modest 525 kWh. This could be supplied by a five square-meter, 500-Watt solar panel mounted on the roof of the garage

2.0i: In addition to being light on its feet, this model simultaneously delivers class-topping fuel efficiency and a luxurious ride. Meanwhile, it boasts a high level of torque in the low- to mid-speed range which is the most frequently used in everyday, practical situations. This base model has been equipped with a highly responsive engine capable of delivering a sensation of instant acceleration, even when the accelerator is only slightly depressed.

2.0D: Fitted with a horizontally-opposed diesel engine that is lightweight, compact, and uniquely Subaru, the 2.0D offers a high degree of torque even at low speeds and excellent response to operation of the accelerator. This base model also boasts excellent fuel efficiency with low CO2 emissions.

Spacious and comfortable interior space

An ample wheelbase was secured without having to increase the length of the vehicle. As a result of moving the A-pillars forward, the passenger compartment conveys a wonderful sense of spaciousness. The space gained from extending the wheelbase has been used to give more knee room to rear-seat occupants, who can now also place their feet inside the large open areas underneath the front seats. Thanks to these enhancements, the new Subaru XV has more rear-seat knee room than any other vehicle in its class. Naturally, this contributes to a higher level of comfort.

Improvements to the internal structure of the doors enabled to increased space in the transverse direction inside the passenger compartment. With more shoulder and elbow room, the driver and passengers benefit from best-in-class spaciousness.

The bottom edge of the A-pillars is also moved forward to accentuate the sense of space. In addition, the field of view has been made as unobstructed as possible by optimizing the cross-section of the pillar itself and providing triangular quarter glass in front of the rear-view mirrors. Meanwhile, the heater unit and ducts are also repositioned in the pursuit of a more roomy feeling interior, lowering the top of the instrument panel in the process. Gaps between the side sill and floor have also been closed. And higher seat positions that are more typical of an SUV also make it easier to get into and out of the vehicle.

2012 - Nissan Versa Sedan

Small on the outside, big on the inside. Smart technology with next-generation efficiency. A $10,990 starting M.S.R.P. and low cost of ownership. New dual injector system and sub-planetary CVT design. Expected combined city/highway fuel economy of 33 miles per gallon. New global "V" (for Versatile) platform. Sophisticated styling, high quality interior.

There are myriad ways the all-new 2012 Nissan Versa Sedan breaks new ground for entry-level compact sedans. And many ways to sum them all up. But perhaps a simple statement is best: Innovation Within Reach.

"Compact cars are getting a lot of attention lately due to rising fuel costs and concerns about the environment. Yet many buyers are disappointed in what they find - vehicles rife with compromise," says Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. "This new Versa Sedan, a 'clean sheet' ground-up design, takes small cars in a whole new direction - proving that you don't have to sacrifice style for affordability, interior roominess for a smaller footprint, or drivability for high mpg."

Small When You Need It, Big Where You Want It

Knowing that entry-level vehicles are used as "workhorses" - for commuting on weekdays, errand running on weekends and transporting family and friends all week long - the designers of the new Nissan Versa Sedan sought to combine five-passenger practicality with a high degree of comfort and refinement. It also offers an unexpected level of available entertainment and connectivity features, such as Bluetooth®, navigation system with 5-inch touch-screen display, Satellite Radio and an iPod®/USB interface.

"We see buyers in this segment as people who are always busy, even while relaxing," explains Castignetti. "With the amount of time they typically spend in their vehicles, we want to make sure they feel good about their purchase long after the new car smell has worn off. So we invested in areas that they see and touch most - like available Fine Vision instrumentation, quality fabrics, bright trim work and comfortable seating for front and rear seat passengers."

The new Nissan Versa Sedan's interior volume of 90.0 cubic feet and trunk volume of 14.8 cubic feet (104.8 cubic feet total) are intended to not only look great on a specifications sheet - the passenger and cargo spaces have been configured for real-world use. Nissan Versa Sedan has, for example, more rear legroom than some mid-size sedans - trumping even luxury cars such as the Lexus LS460, BMW 5-series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. And the trunk design focuses on useable space, taking into consideration everything from the size of the hinges to the shape of the sidewalls. A 60/40-split fold-down rear seat is offered on SL models for even greater versatility.

Other available interior features include trip computer, power windows with driver's one-touch down, speed-sensing auto door locks, remote trunk release lever and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Two interior colors are available, Sandstone and Charcoal.

The Nissan Versa Sedan's new exterior design is also a departure from most current compact sedans, offering a fresh, refreshing design character that is both sophisticated and highly aerodynamic.

"The new Versa Sedan stands out as the only expensive looking car in the segment - with a lot of eye power," said Castignetti. "Its sculpted, dynamic proportions are modern without being gimmicky, projecting a much higher sense of design value than you might expect in a vehicle with a $10,990 starting M.S.R.P."

To achieve the new Nissan Versa Sedan's upscale look, the designers gave the exterior shape a strong sense of volume, with a wide shoulder width and a smooth silhouette. In front, Versa Sedan features Nissan's new signature sedan grille design and jewel-like headlights.

The front end blends smoothly into the cabin, which offers flowing curves, while design elements such as the shape of the trunklid help give the new Nissan Versa Sedan excellent aerodynamics, including a low coefficient of drag of just 0.31.

In addition, to help ensure superb functionality, fresh ideas were addressed in the initial stage between the designers and the engineering team. For example, the indented line in the middle of the Nissan Versa Sedan's sweeping roofline is not just a design feature, but a functional innovation that helps reduce the amplitude of the roof panel vibrations in order to create a quieter cabin interior without the use of reinforcement devices called "mass bumpers."

"Design and engineering came together in an extraordinary collaboration to create a level of sophistication that you not only see but also feel," adds Castignetti. "It helps provide a sense of 'modern value' that goes far beyond the mere purchase price, much like you expect from larger, more expensive sedans."

Other exterior features include a fixed roof antenna, body-color front and rear fascias and available chrome-accented grille, blacked-out B-pillar, chrome door handles and front fog lights.

The 2012 Versa Sedan is offered in eight exterior colors, including Metallic Blue, Blue Onyx, Super Black, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Gray, Red Brick, Fresh Powder and Titanium - which has previously been reserved for the Nissan GT-R among Nissan models.

2012 - Subaru Impreza

Subaru launched the all-new, fourth-generation 2012 Subaru Impreza model at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. Debuting bolder, more dynamic design and new engines, Subaru's compact contender will also offer increased interior space, refinement and handling agility.

New interior features, infotainment technology and higher grade interior materials promise a more rewarding driving and ownership experience for customers of the 2012 Impreza.

For the UK market, a new 1.6 litre Boxer engine will be teamed with a five-speed manual transmission or the second generation Lineartronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). Every new Subaru Impreza is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Subaru's invaluable performance and safety enhancing system.

Built on a longer wheelbase but with shorter overhangs, the new Subaru Impreza provides a roomier interior in the same external footprint as the outgoing model. The new passenger cabin not only yields more room, but crucially a greater feeling of spaciousness and better visibility than before.

Bold Design Statement Also Enhances Functionality

The all new Subaru Impreza conveys a bolder, more confident design that emphasises its sporty roots and standard All-Wheel Drive system. In profile, the 2012 Impreza draws focus to its wheels with powerful arches, a theme that debuted on the 2010 Subaru Legacy.

From the front, the Subaru badge centres the new hexagonal grille, a keystone of all new Subaru designs. The new Impreza sports characteristic Subaru hawk-eye headlights and a range of new 15-inch wheel cover and 16- and 17-inch alloy wheel designs.

Numerous design elements combine to give the Subaru Impreza a sportier exterior stance while also offering the driver and passengers a more commanding view of the road. The windscreen is more raked than in the previous model, with the bottom of the A-pillar moved 7.9 inches forward. This allows for a front door opening that is nearly five inches longer for easier entry/exit, abetted by lower doorsills. Rear doors are also larger on both 4 and 5-door body styles.

Driver visibility has been greatly improved through the use of thinner A-pillars and partitioned front door side glass. Where the door trim meets the window has also been lowered, helping visibility further. The instrument panel is lower and flatter than the outgoing model to give a wider field of view and a feeling of greater spaciousness. New exterior wing mirrors have greater surface area to enhance visibility while relocating them from the A-pillars to the doors contributes to improved sight lines.

Improved Room and Refinement

The new Subaru Impreza's wheelbase grows to 104.1 inches (compared to 103.2 in the outgoing model), while length and width measurements remain the same.

The combination of a longer wheelbase with re-designed interior trim and front seats has led to gains in passenger and cargo room. Rear seat passengers gain nearly two inches of legroom, thanks to both the longer wheelbase and a new, scalloped-style front seat backrest redesign. The 5-door hatchback will benefit from increased luggage space and now provides a completely flat load floor with the standard 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded.

It is now easier to load and unload heavy objects, thanks to the removal of a stepped section under the opening. The cargo area cover can now be stored under the cargo floor, as in the Forester.

Subaru has paid a great deal of attention to improving refinement. Richer looking interior appointments and details abound, including soft-touch materials for the dashboard, door trim and centre console armrest.

Carrying space and utility has been improved throughout; larger door pockets can hold plastic drink bottles and large maps and numerous compartments located in and around the centre console hold all manner of personal items, such as phones, USB drives and MP3 players.

Greater comfort is assured with Subaru Impreza's new front seats with their higher seatbacks, increased lumbar support and cushions that more effectively distribute pressure. As in the 2010 Legacy, the seats are optimized for a rear-end collision. A tilt/telescoping steering wheel is standard on all 2012 Subaru Impreza models.

2011 - Smart forvision Concept

smart has always been a pioneer in matters of urban mobility and with the smart fortwo electric drive the company is showing the direction of development in cities around the world. Together with BASF, the largest automotive supplier in the chemical industry, smart is demonstrating its leading role in the use of forward-looking technologies above and beyond the drive system. The joint concept vehicle smart forvision presented at the 2011 International Motor Show in Frankfurt combines a futuristic design with technologies relating to energy efficiency, lightweight design and temperature management.

"With the forvision smart is doing justice to its role as Daimler's think tank for urban mobility. We are presenting numerous world premieres that make uncompromising electric mobility possible. With the clear objective of greatly increasing the zero-emission range we concerned ourselves with all factors that influence this on the vehicle. This resulted in completely new concepts and materials in the areas of insulation, reflection, lightweight design and energy management. In addition to transparent organic solar cells, transparent and energy-saving light-emitting diodes and infrared-reflective films and coatings, high-performance foams are used for insulation against cold and heat. smart is also setting new standards of lightweight design with the use of the first all-plastic wheels", says Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart. "In conjunction with smart's revolutionary DNA, we have designed a vehicle that is so unique that we can't wait to take it out of the research laboratory and onto the roads!"

"Cars of the future need materials and technologies which reduce energy consumption whilst also increasing the range and level of comfort. Our innovations make a decisive contribution to this", says Dr. Christian Fischer, Head of BASF Polymer Research. "We are proud to have developed a holistic concept for sustainable urban mobility in cooperation with smart. Together we are presenting a pioneering vehicle which is without parallel.

Thanks to the combination of smart's automotive expertise and BASF's material and system competence a vehicle has been created which showcases technologies for sustainable and holistic electric mobility of the future. The researchers and designers intentionally realised a mixture of visionary materials and technologies in the concept vehicle - some of these are still at a laboratory stage, while others have a realistic chance of entering series production.

Energy efficiency: light and energy from above

The hexagonal transparent areas on the roof of the smart forvision are an eye-catching feature - as the first light-transmitting roof that also generates energy. Transparent solar cells covering the entire roof surface are the technology used here. They are based on organic dyes embedded in a sandwich roof. The transparent dyes of the solar cells are light-activated. Even in diffused light and poor light conditions they generate enough energy to power the multimedia components and the three fans that assist with climate management in the vehicle interior. If the vehicle is standing in the sun the ventilation is permanently operated with the help of these solar cells, keeping the car cool. This new photovoltaic technology opens up further efficiency potential and the energy generated can be used for further applications in the car.

There is an additional new feature under the solar cells: transparent OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes) illuminate the vehicle interior when the door is opened or a button pressed. When switched off they allow for a clear view outside. This results in a glass roof effect during the daytime, whilst the areas are pleasantly illuminated without any dazzle at night. Thanks to a free choice of colours the new OLEDs do not only offer more design freedom, they also consume less than half as much energy as conventional energy-saving lamps.

Lightweight design: different, better, stylish

In the smart forvision a world first leads to a considerable weight reduction and a unique design: the first all-plastic wheel suitable for high-volume production. In its current development status, the wheel developed by BASF from a new high-performance material results in a considerable weight saving of three kilograms per wheel. Unlike conventional polyamide composite materials this new plastic has long reinforcing fibres which improve its mechanical properties. The result: excellent thermal and chemical stability, dynamic strength, toughness and good continuous operating characteristics. First intensive product tests at smart show the performance capability of the all-plastic wheel and confirm the potential for possible use in production vehicles.

In addition to the tridion passenger cell, further components such as the doors are made of carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy resin - a high-performance composite material. The use of such materials enables a weight saving of more than 50 percent to be achieved compared with steel, or 30 percent compared with aluminium. Thanks to short hardening times the resin systems from BASF are also suitable for producing larger volumes.

2011 - Skoda Yeti 4x4

People have never tired of talking about that mythical creature who, with his white fur coat and sharp teeth, lives high up in icy mountains. Although they have never met him, people still speak with great conviction of their encounter with that peaceful inhabitant of the dizzying heights, who is said to have shown many a lost soul the route from the regions of eternal ice to the safety of the valley below. Škoda Auto is celebrating a new member of our model range, which has been given the name of that helpful snowman: The Škoda Yeti is launched. The choice of name truly has a deeper significance. The Škoda Yeti is strong, geared to move under difficult conditions and help its passengers along where others give up. But it has the edge on the original Yeti: Unlike him, it is also happy in warmer areas, finding its way not just in difficult terrain and off road, but with equal confidence and assurance on the road.

These were precisely the aims its designers had in mind during Škoda Yeti's development: The fifth model in the Škoda range would combine these virtues, which have so far been realised by cars in completely different segments, but not found together in one vehicle. That is, the handling and driving comfort of conventional mid-range vehicles, combined with brilliant off-road capabilities. That such a vehicle should also provide above-average space, high carrying capacity and a powerful towing capability has raised the stakes considerably.

The result marks a new chapter in the extremely diverse history of Škoda. Although in the past there were a number of off-road vehicles in the long-established Škoda brand, they never even remotely met the high demands of uncompromised suitability for driving on normal, public roads as well as off-road that Škoda Yeti does.

The first notable Škoda off-roader was a prototype of the Škoda Superb 3000 - Kfz 15 (type 956). From 1942 to 1943, it was built as a saloon with a 3.1 litre, in-line, six cylinder engine and four wheel drive. The type 973 off-road vehicle was produced from 1952 to 1956 and left its mark thanks to its off-road suitability, a wading depth of 600 millimetres, a climbing capability of 85 per cent and excellent handling on the road.

Yeti takes Škoda's experience of more than 100 years of car development, concentrating and honing it in a comfortable and powerful vehicle, setting new standards in the compact SUV segment. Škoda Yeti comes to market with five wide-opening doors, making access to the passenger compartment and luggage storing easy. In addition, permanent, intelligent, power-distributing four-wheel drive and ground clearance of 180 millimetres makes Škoda Yeti suitable for off-roading.

Škoda Yeti's overall length of 4,223 millimetres allows drivers to fit into even those parking spaces that are far from generous, while its width of 1,793 millimetres guarantees that the doors can be opened wide in tight spots. And if the terrain becomes rough and more challenging, the slim stature of the Škoda Yeti always finds a gap to get through. Dimensions are a height of 1,691 millimetres, unladen weight with driver of 1,520 kilograms (1.8 TSI 4x4) and a load of at least 545 kilograms, with flexible boot volume of 416 litres to 1,760 litres. A maximum trailer weight of 1,800 kilograms makes Škoda Yeti a safe and hardworking towing vehicle.

In the compact SUV segment, the Škoda Yeti encounters seasoned competitors, such as the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai Tucson, the Nissan Qashqai and Suzuki Grand Vitara. Škoda Yeti claims leadership in this very popular, but densely populated, class. Apart from its excellent off-road properties and handling characteristics in town, on country roads and motorways - which in no way lag behind those of the compact sector - the new Škoda possesses the youngest engine range in the segment. This ensures maximum fuel economy and the lowest possible emissions.

Škoda Yeti's developers believe the SUV class can only achieve lasting success with an environmentally sound and affordable engine strategy. Therefore, Škoda Yeti's engine range is based on Škoda's downsizing strategy, reducing capacity while at the same increasing performance, thanks to highly sophisticated forced induction. High torque at low engine speeds results from this innovative power unit development.

At the same time, consumption is lowered, easing the strain on Škoda Yeti drivers' wallets, and engine emissions drop, making a significant contribution to the reduction of CO2, NOX and HC. Škoda Yeti wants to be at home in nature and, therefore, not endanger it. For motorists who may not want permanent four-wheel drive, Škoda Auto also offers Yeti in front-wheel drive versions. The generous ground clearance of the new compact SUV still ensures better and safer progress on poor, rutted tracks.

2012 - Seat Alhambra 4WD

With its permanent all-wheel drive, the new SEAT Alhambra 4WD offers a major benefit in traction on all types of surfaces and in every situation. Safety and mobility under wintery road conditions benefit just as much as its characteristics as a towing vehicle. At the same time, the next-generation electronically controlled all-wheel drive is set up for optimum handling. Thanks to the sophisticated design and perfectly tuned running gear, the SEAT Alhambra stands by the spirit of the brand by offering a high level of sporty driving fun - something thus far unexpected from an MPV. Nevertheless, the Alhambra's excellent long-distance comfort remains fully intact.

Improved handling and traction

Its dynamic handling, refined directional stability and excellent body roll characteristics, delivered by its sophisticated chassis and suspension, make every new Alhambra a pleasure to drive. The SEAT Alhambra 4WD builds on the capabilities of the front-wheel drive models with a significant increase in traction under all road conditions. Plus, the all-wheel drive system has been perfectly integrated into the Alhambra without significant changes to the chassis. The power to the rear axle flows via an angle drive on the front differential and the drive shaft to the Haldex coupling. In order to further improve the already good axle load distribution, it is mounted at the end of the drive shaft together with the rear differential in a single casing. This all-new component is extremely compact and highly robust.

Next-generation hi-tech unit

Running in an oil bath inside this electronically controlled coupling is a multi-disc package that can be pressed together via regulated hydraulic pressure in a continuously variable fashion. The driving force sent to the rear axle is dependent upon the pressure applied. The necessary operating pressure is supplied by an electric annular piston pump, with a pressure accumulator maintaining a constant oil pressure of 30 bar. As a result, the Haldex coupling can operate extremely quickly via an electronically controlled valve, delivering a clear benefit in difficult driving situations. The second and equally important advantage - earlier all-wheel drive systems could react only to the differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels. In contrast, the all-wheel coupling on the SEAT Alhambra 4WD receives its orders entirely from electronic intelligence, thus enabling it to take anticipatory action in combination with ESP and ABS.

Fast and continuously variable power distribution

When pulling away or accelerating, for instance, a great deal of torque is required at the rear axle - the discs are pressed heavily together and a lot of power is diverted rearwards. In an extreme case and to avoid spinning front wheels, the system sends all the driving force to the rear. Under constant driving conditions, on the other hand, very little power is required at the rear axle. The coupling opens substantially, which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. Under braking, the coupling opens completely, with no power flowing to the rear. This all-wheel drive system can exercise the full extent of its capabilities as soon as handling systems like ABS, ESP and EDS kick in on slippery road surfaces. Depending on the particular situation, the coupling can be opened for an ABS intervention, or closed for ESP input - in either case, this happens quickly and smoothly.

Powerful performance and outstanding efficiency

The SEAT Alhambra 4WD is equipped with the 2.0 TDI with 103 kW / 140 hp and six-speed manual gearbox. It combines powerful performance with excellent efficiency. Top speed stands at 191 km/h, while acceleration to 100 km/h takes 11.4 seconds. Yet the TDI consumes an average of just 6.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, equating to a CO2 figure of 158 grams per km. This is thanks in large part to the Ecomotive package with brake energy recovery and stop/start system. It is also equipped with an SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction), a technology that makes the SEAT Alhambra 4WD one of the world's cleanest diesels.

Awe-inspiring powertrain

Powering the 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is Chrysler Group's all-new 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers an estimated 465 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque - an improvement of 45 horsepower and 45 lb.-ft. torque over the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 it replaces.

An active intake manifold and high-lift camshaft with cam phasing delivers maximum low-end torque while optimizing high-end power across a wider and improved rpm band. Specifically, 90-percent of peak torque is available between 2,800 and 6,000 rpm, allowing for inspired standing starts and improved straight-line performance.

Standard Fuel Saver Technology and a new-for-2012 active valve exhaust system allows four-cylinder operation to engage over a wider rpm range, to deliver both improved fuel efficiency - an estimated 13-percent increase on the highway - and an extended range of approximately 450 miles on one tank of gas.

Standard steering wheel mounted paddle shifters join the standard AutoStick on the floor. Both are mated to a proven automatic transmission, allowing a choice of spirited shifting on the road and the race track. Both methods give the driver the ability to shift while the transmission controller calibration prevents situations that might over rev the engine. Fully adaptive electronic control of all shifting makes the powertrain more responsive while minimizing harshness.

2011 - Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale

The Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale by Zagato is based on the Viper ACR mechanical chassis with a carbon fibre body. "Bellezza necessaria" is the inspiration of this car which matches for the first time an USA power train and can represent the first American Alfa Romeo.

Following Zagato's gentlemen-driver heritage, TZ3 Corsa has been commissioned by the Alfa Romeo Zagato collector Martin Kapp. The first Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale has been delivered to the US Alfa Romeo and Zagato collector (and Saratoga Automobile Museum's board member) Eric King. The TZ3 Stradale n°2 and n°3 will be delivered in Japan and Europe.

Both TZ3 Corsa and TZ3 Stradale boast a typical Kamm-tail (K-tail) layout. This solution became famous in Italy with the "Coda Tronca" bodies which were tested by Zagato in the beginning of the 60s. They reached their apex on the Alfa Romeo TZ and TZ2. Kamm Effect is part of the functional design approach that aims to the aerodynamic efficiency. According to this, the CX can be lowered by keeping compact volumes at the same time. The reduction of the wind resistance is assured with the Kamm Tail design, without any need of a very stretched "drop" shape of the tail.

2013 - Fisker Surf - New Concept

In a design masterstroke, Fisker Automotive has created a completely original vehicle: the first electric luxury/sports automobile for an active and eco-friendly lifestyle. The Fisker Surf builds on the success of the ground-breaking Karma Electric Vehicle with extended range (EVer™) by adding additional, flexible load-carrying capability, along with a spirited new attitude all its own.

Fisker Surf combines performance, luxury, style, utility, and economy with an enduring concern for the sustainable use of resources and respect for our natural environment.

As a global company Fisker Automotive will offer the Surf in all its markets around the world for the 2013 model year. The Fisker Surf will create a new niche and open new customer markets for Fisker, by appealing to those looking for this unique blend of advanced technology, innovative design and environmental sensitivity, with added versatility. Europe, in particular, has demonstrated a historic fondness for sport-wagon design, and it is there where Fisker anticipates strong demand.

The Fisker Surf is the first vehicle of its kind and a radical departure from traditional vehicles offered by other manufacturers. It brings added energy to Fisker's focus on Uncompromised Responsible LuxuryTM and Pure Driving PassionTM.

Exterior Design

Very early in the development of the original Karma sedan, company CEO and Executive Design Director, Henrik Fisker decided a more versatile variant would be part of the model lineup. So when the time came for the evolution from Karma to Surf the path had already been defined for combining utility with bold and striking design.

In mid-2009, with the Karma's design settled, preliminary work began on the Surf. Using the Karma as a starting point, lines and angles around the rear quarters were extended for the new roof contour, side window shapes and liftgate.

The design result is perhaps the most elegant production sport-wagon ever made.

"The Fisker Surf is a first-of-its-kind eco-friendly lifestyle vehicle that offers space, performance and luxury design for people who live an active, environmentally conscious lifestyle and like to drive beautiful cars," said Henrik Fisker.

A five door vehicle has never looked this sporty with its voluptuous sculptured rear fenders and dynamic side profile. The rear end of the Fisker Surf flows elegantly around to the side of the car with an artfully incorporated roof spoiler adding to the drama of the rear end. The liftgate itself is quite a sophisticated piece, combining utility with an aerodynamic form styled for a distinctive flair. Even the high-mounted LED brake light is seamlessly integrated into the rear hatch and nearly invisible until it illuminates.

Stunning new wheels - still of 22 inch diameter as standard -- are an evolution of the Karma's Circuit BladeTM design, and quite intricate. They make use of a two-color paint scheme separated by machined areas. The bright orange Brembo® brake calipers, exclusive to the Fisker Surf, show boldly through the wheels.

At the front of the car, designers took the opportunity to create a sporty identity for the Fisker Surf with a new three-dimensional honeycomb pattern grille.

The unique solar roof panel that is a Fisker signature has been integrated into the Fisker Surf, with a few twists. The optional solar panel not only captures sunlight to power the car, it is actually see-through, with a dark-tint translucence that adds to the sense of openness inside the car, specifically in the rear seats. Standard is a tinted-glass panoramic roof panel that tilts open at the back for added ventilation.

Integrated roof rails allow for added cargo capacity and have been designed to suit the style of the car.

While the overall stance and dimensions of the Fisker Surf are unchanged from those of the Karma sedan, the new car appears longer and sleeker with its extended roofline and side glass.

The Surf is Fisker's vision of a crossover between a sport car and a station wagon and shows how Fisker is expanding its Karma platform rapidly with additional models that again create a new market niche.

Interior Design

A strong sense of luxury and style compliments the Fisker Surf's flexible capabilities, thanks to the beautifully integrated rework of the luggage and rear passenger areas. Once again, the Karma sedan provided an excellent foundation, with its handsomely crafted interior and thoughtful amenities. The Surf creates its own distinctive identity in the details of its beautiful, versatile cabin.

The cargo area accessed by the Fisker Surf's new liftgate is divided into three functional regions, starting with the trunk space at the rear, for large items such as golf bags and suitcases. Set off forward of that is a raised shelf designers refer to as "the podium," to handily accommodate smaller objects and give useful function to an area constrained by the presence of the electric powertrain's large invertors under the floor.

A third region of the cargo area is created by the individual folding rear seatbacks. Either or both can flip forward to accommodate additional or oversize luggage or gear.

The Surf's center console between the rear seats, under which the car's main battery is located, also incorporates an additional storage bin.

Fisker's design philosophy is evident throughout the Surf's new interior. In addition to integrating the company's signature diamond motifs, there was a clear determination to not settle for the ordinary. The divider panel between the trunk space and the podium is a richly crafted piece with cast aluminum, brushed plating and netting inspired by a high-end catamaran. Similarly, the innovative latch handles to release the rear seat backs are leather-trimmed and developed for their tactile feel. They mirror the fittings on fine designer luggage.

Passenger accommodations take advantage of the Fisker Surf's new roof contour. Headroom is increased significantly in back, thanks to both the higher roofline and the absence of headliner under the tinted glass or solar-electric roof panels. Larger side-window areas also allow improved outward visibility and add a sense of openness.

It's the perfect place to enjoy the active-sports lifestyle that the Surf both expresses and enables.

Technology and Performance

The Fisker Surf takes full advantage of the advanced, high-efficiency powertrain and the innovative space frame architecture of the Karma sedan it is based on. Mechanically, the cars are virtually identical.

As the first true electric vehicle with extended range (EVerTM), the Karma - and now the Surf - use an innovative series-hybrid drive system in which the car is powered only by electrical energy. The onboard gasoline engine drives only a generator. A pair of powerful electric traction motors drive the rear wheels, taking energy from a 20 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack carried inside the car's central tunnel. A 175kW generator supplies energy to the motors and the batteries. It is driven, only when needed, by the efficient 260 hp turbocharged and direct-fuel-injected gasoline engine.

So just like a diesel-electric locomotive, the Fisker Surf driver always enjoys the instantaneous torque and smooth response, while the internal combustion engine coupled to the electric motors provide increased energy for maximum performance and extended range.

Two driving modes, Sport and Stealth, are available to the driver at all times. In Sport mode, full power is available and the driver can command the unmatched 981 lb-ft (1,330 Nm) of torque to accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 5.9 seconds, and achieve an electronically limited top speed of 125 mph (201 kmh).

In the default Stealth mode, calibrated for efficiency, the Surf uses only battery power and accelerates from 0-60 in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 95 mph (153 kmh). Under normal driving conditions, battery power alone will drive the Surf about 50 miles (80 km). After that the gasoline engine/generator and 9.5-gal (36 l) fuel tank provide another 250 miles of range for a total of 300 miles (483 km).

Using a standard 110-volt household supply, the Fisker Surf's battery will fully recharge in about 14 hours. The Fisker Surf can also utilize standard European 220-volt outlets, allowing this time to fall to about six hours.

The Fisker Surf and Karma share an innovative architecture that helps deliver sparkling performance while ensuring confident control and a quiet, comfortable ride. The rigid aluminum structure, long wheelbase, sophisticated independent suspension and standard 22-inch wheels form the basis of a lithe, supple and responsive road car. A low center of gravity and 47/53-percent weight distribution help impart a sporting feel.

The massive Brembo brakes work in conjunction with a fully blended regenerative system. During stops, energy that would otherwise be lost as heat is seamlessly recovered and fed back into the battery to help extend range and maximize efficiency.
